Graphic design firm, RipeConcepts, is offering 2 hours of free graphic design work as a way to meet new potential clients.
Two hours is enough time for Ripe to design a new logo for a blog, put together a banner, template for a newsletter, create a customized business card, etc. There is no obligation to use them again, and they won’t exceed the 2 hour time limit so you won’t get hit with having to pay at the end.
On average, a pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash every 120 minutes. Almost two-thirds of pedestrian fatalities occur when the light condition is either dark or dark with street lights.
No matter how well a driver thinks he can drive, the fact is that visibility is severely impaired in the dark. Pedestrians, bicyclists, skaters and others not driving a vehicle are at great risk to be hurt simply because they are not clearly visible to traffic.
In order to reduce traffic accidents and make our children and ourselves safer on US roads, Safees is introducing hard prism traffic safety reflectors to the USA. Simply by attaching a reflector to yourself or your child you will increase your visibility to oncoming traffic by anywhere between 300 and 1,000 percent (depending on distance, darkness, weather). That can be the difference between being safe or not.
Safees are hard prism reflectors that are attached by a simple pin to your clothes at knee or thigh height. By letting the Safees swing freely, facing traffic, it will reflect oncoming cars’ headlights and increase your visibility, alerting drivers to your presence on the road and giving drivers more time to stop or steer clear and thus avoiding accidents.
Scandinavian countries have the best traffic safety records in the whole world and reflectors are household staples. In fact in Sweden every school child wears one and traffic fatalities involving children are the lowest in the world (WHO: Global Status report on Road Safety).
Safees are manufactured in Finland and are CE and Lloyds certified and adheres to all relevant ISO standards as well as meeting the very high EU standards for environmental consideration; no waste is produced when manufacturing Safees and, naturally, Safees are themselves 100% recyclable.
By attaching an inexpensive, cute and fun Safees to yourself and your child, you can greatly reduce the risk of you or your child getting hurt. Wearing a Safees will reduce the risk of being hit by cars by up to ten times.
Safees can be attached to anyone moving around in traffic: pedestrians, cyclists, horses, strollers, pets, skaters, etc.
Safees are available at www.safees.com. They retail at $6 USD each and come in wide variety of fun designs and colors. Discounts are available for schools and nonprofit organizations. Click here for instructions on how to use them.
I worried that they would all be babyish and I wouldn’t find any my kids would like, but not true:

SheSpeaks has teamed up with Recalls Plus to help you stay ahead of the game when it comes to your children’s well-being! Available on Facebook, iPhone, and Android.
About Recalls Plus:
They are a team of about 10 developers, designers and other professional problem solvers, working around the clock to make sure that we don’t miss catching a recall on kid’s products or food with undeclared allergens. Recalls Plus is designed and built for busy parents like me and you so we can focus on the important things in life.
Click here to be taken to the download page. Oh yeah, did I mention that it’s FREE?
My thoughts:
Having downloaded it and tried it out myself I’m so impressed! I saw food (thankfully I don’t have any), Car Seats, Sippy Cups, Clothing, Rattles, Teethers, and more! This is an essential app for everyone: mom, dad and grandparent alike!
If you have specific items you’d like to track you can enter them and be notified if your item becomes recalled. You do need to know the model number if you want specific information, if you don’t have the model number I would assume you’d get general information on all products. For example, I have an Eddie Bauer car seat, but I don’t know the serial/model number, the sticker has been tore up. So when I entered it I will receive watch list emails for all Eddie Bauer Car Seats. Nice! That works for me!

I missed the chat tonight on Facebook with Lisa Loeb! She was chatting on Crayola’s wall about Inside the Crayon box.
Topics covered during the chat:
Why Does Creativity Matter? Creativity is not about who´s the best artists or becoming an architect. It´s a way of thinking that encourages kids´ original ideas and develops their confidence.
Growing Up Creative. Lisa will share stories about growing up in a home where creativity was encouraged.
Simple Tips. Easy Ideas. Like most moms, Lisa juggles a lot. She´ll share simple, easy ways she sparks her daughter´s creativity as part of their daily routine.
I was busy doing dinner, laundry, new puppy duties, and I kept thinking I had until 9pm. Problem is that I’m central time, and the chat started at 9 Eastern time. So yeah, it’s over.
But it’s not too late to check out the conversation! You can view it here:

Let’s talk about insurance. I keep hearing on the news that if you live in an area that floods, that you need to buy flood plain insurance! WHAT?!? So what I’m getting from this is that if my home floods, my home owner’s policy won’t cover it? I needed to know more.
“Homeowners insurance is an insurance policy that protects you financially in the event that your home and property is damaged in a covered peril, or in the event of a covered lawsuit.
Perils that are typically covered by a standard home insurance policy include fire, wind, lightning, hail and theft. While no one plans on losing their home or possessions to any of these perils, it unfortunately happens every day. Ask yourself this: If your home was ever destroyed in a fire, for example, how would you pay to rebuild your home? That’s where your homeowners insurance comes in.”
So as I understand it, homeowners insurance covers your property from unforeseen hazards whether from mother nature or theft/fire. OK, I get that. I think I need to review my policy and find out exactly what it covers. So what I need is enough money in an insurance policy to rebuild my home (or buy one), buy all new appliances, electronics, clothes, books, etc. That’s a lot of stuff to think about!
So that got me thinking, is there an insurance company that covers just appliances and other systems? Because just a month ago our air conditioner broke. WE have to buy a new one. We don’t have a plan or policy that covers these types of things. When we bought our house I’m not even sure if we had a Home Warranties Inspection. I’m not evern sure if I know what it is!
American Home Shield insures expensive systems and appliances (including heat/ac, electric, water heaters, refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines). These items are insured from unforeseen hazards as well as normal wear and tear (eventually these things just break down, and when they do AHS takes care of it).
I’m sure in the near future all of our appliances will kick the bucket. My washer and dryer are from the early 70′s! Our fridge and stove we bought new. Luckily we have a new furnace, so that’s safe for now. Do you have a Home Warranty? Are you considering it now? Click here to see all the things you can get covered. You can create your own combo plan too! I checked off all the appliances and systems that I have and may need replaced someday and my total comes to just under $37.00 a month! I’m pretty happy with that. We are on a budget just like everyone else, but when it comes down to it I can actually afford this! This is much more affordable than the new A/C unit I’m about to buy. Wish I had the insurance a few months ago. Live and learn.
